Abstract
The evolution of plant roots shaped the terrestrial landscape and underpinned the radiation of land plants. The aim of the talk is to provide an overview of the early evolution of plant roots, a picture built up from combining evidence from fossils, living species and comparative omics approaches. The talk will also highlight the importance of Scottish plant fossils in transforming our understanding of the early evolution of roots. I will end the talk by giving a brief introduction to the work of my Future Leaders Fellowship which I started in the Institute of Molecular Plant Sciences at the University of Edinburgh in October 2020.
