Scientists at the College of Life Sciences, studying an important tumour suppressor, which is involved in at least a quarter of all cancers, have uncovered new ways in which it works. The research team at the have been studying the tumour suppressor protein PTEN, which when `turned off’ or damaged drives the development of many cancers.

Rachael Di Santo, a student in the Stark Group, has won the Singer Instruments competition to name their new tetrad dissection microscope. Not only has the microscope been endowed with Rachel’s suggested name, the Stark Group also received a free microscope worth £6,000. Rachael was filmed in the Stark laboratory receiving the news of her win and the new microscope. She said, ‘It was a complete surprise! I’m so pleased my entry won. The new microscope looks amazing and I’m looking forward to using it as soon as possible.’

Researchers at the College of Life Sciences have identified fexinidazole as a possible, much-needed, new treatment for the parasitic disease visceral leishmaniasis.
