Meet Dave the Worm, the new mascot for the Parkinson’s UK charity appeal. Dave and his friends have been helping Dr. Anton Gartner and his team to understand what happens when dopamine-producing cells start to die, and to isolate a gene that they think might protect these nerve cells, which could lead to treatments that slow or stop the progression of Parkinson's.

Congratulations to Kati Klotz (Supervisor: Julian Blow) for successfully defending her PhD Thesis entitled ‘Consequences of partial chromosome replication in the mammalian cells’. Her internal examiner was Jason Swedlow and external examiner was Mike Gonzalez of The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust & Institute of Cancer Research.

A team of postgraduate students from the College of Life Sciences at the University of Dundee has won the Scottish round of the Biotechnology Young Entrepreneurs Scheme (YES) qualifying them for the finals in London in December. Biotechnology YES is an innovative competition developed to raise awareness of the commercialisation of bioscience ideas among postgraduate students and postdoctoral scientists. This is the first time a Scottish team has made it through to the finals.

The University of Dundee’s `citadel of science’ will open its doors to the public this weekend, giving an insight into the internationally renowned research being conducted in the city. The College of Life Sciences is open to all members of the public on Saturday 10th November for its annual Open Doors Day. Entrance is via the Medical Sciences Institute building on Dow Street.
