    Dr Miratul Muqit, of the MRC-PPU at the University of Dundee, has been awarded the prestigious 2013 Linacre Medal and Prize Lecture of the Royal College of Physicians. The award recognises recent advances which Dr Miratul and his research group have made in understanding the role of enzymes which underlie neurodegeneration in Parkinson’s disease. Dr Muqit is a Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellow and Programme Leader in the Medical Research Council (MRC) Protein Phosphorylation and Ubiquitylation Unit in the College of Life Sciences at Dundee.

    Hannah Sonnenberg from the Muller lab has won the first prize for her poster “The role of the MAST kinase Drop out in cellularisation of Drosophila melanogaster” at the third Scottish Drosophila Meeting held at the university of Glasgow on 6 December 2013.

    Francesca Nardi, a PhD student in Hari Hundal’s lab (Division of Cell Signalling & Immunology), was awarded the accolade of the best presentation at the annual Diabetes UK networking day. The conference, a national meeting held in London last week, saw fellow PhD students (all funded by the charity and working across the UK ), along with professors and lay audience-members vote Francesca’s research presentation as the best.

    The future direction of forensic science research and how it may be expanded beyond a reliance on DNA analysis will be explored at the Royal Society of Edinburgh tomorrow (Thurs Dec 5th). Until now, this field has been dominated by a single focus on the development of DNA analysis largely to the potential detriment of the application of other technological advances.
