    Dr Miratul Muqit has received a prestigious award recognising his breakthroughs in understanding Parkinson’s disease. Dr Muqit is both a Consultant Neurologist at Ninewells Hospital, where he treats Parkinson’s patients, and a researcher carrying out cutting-edge research into the debilitating condition in the School. He has been awarded the 2018 Graham Bull Prize in Clinical Science and Goulstonian Lecture of the Royal College of Physicians (RCP).

    About five years ago, researchers in Philip Cohen’s lab discovered that a family of protein kinases, termed the Salt-Inducible Kinases (SIKs), keep macrophages in the pro-inflammatory state needed to combat infection, and that compounds suppressing SIK activity switch macrophages to an anti-inflammatory state that is critical for the resolution of inflammation.

    Biomedical Honours students who completed their laboratory-based project with Dr William Fuller in the School of Medicine are the first three authors in his newest publication available today in the Journal of Biological Chemistry. The research provides understanding on the process of heart muscle relaxation between beats which may lead to new targets for treating heart disease. Fiona Plain, Rachel Yee and Samitha (Dilini) Congreve were honours students with Dr Fuller in 14/15, 15/16 and 16/17 respectively.

    Dundee University spin-out company, Exscientia, won two awards at the Chemistry Means Business 2017 Awards, hosted by the UK Royal Society of Chemistry in Manchester last week. Its Chief Executive Officer Andrew Hopkins has been named Chemistry World ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ and Chief Technology Officer Jérémy Besnard won the ‘Rising Star in Industry’ Award for their work at Exscientia, an innovative company at the forefront of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven drug discovery.
