Scientists at the Wellcome Centre for Anti-Infectives Research (WCAIR) at the University of Dundee have been awarded £4.9million in follow-on funding from the Wellcome Trust, boosting their efforts to understand more about potential drugs that could be used to treat neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) and other parasitic diseases.

Protein levels in human cells can determine the susceptibility of people to diseases such as ovarian cancer and Alzheimer’s, a University of Dundee study has found. Human cell proteins are the targets of almost all drugs and differences in protein activity or the levels of proteins present are ultimately responsible for many different types of disease.

Natalie Bamford, a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in the lab of Nicola Stanley-Wall, has been awarded a prestigious two-year EMBO Long-term fellowship to study bacterial biofilms which will help efforts to remove biofilms when they are detrimental or, conversely, aid in the exploitation of biofilms for industrial biotechnology.

Three of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies have pledged £7.5 million to allow the University of Dundee’s Division of Signal Transduction Therapy (DSTT) to continue its award-winning work. Pharmaceutical giants Boehringer Ingelheim, GlaxoSmithKline and Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, will provide the multi-million pound support for fundamental research in multiple therapeutic areas, including cancer, arthritis, lupus, hypertension and Parkinson’s disease. This new round of funding will support dozens of posts at Dundee for the next four years.

The three-year alliance will allow knowledge, skills and technology sharing, as well as two joint postdoctoral positions, in order to accelerate discoveries on molecular metabolic signalling in control of glucose homeostasis We are proud to announce the launch of an International Research Alliance between the Medical Research Council Phosphorylation and Ubiquitylation Unit (MRC PPU), at the University of Dundee, and the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research (CBMR), at the University of Copenhagen.
