  • Julia Wcislo Runner-up in Max Perutz Science Writing Award 2020

    Earlier this month, Julia Wcislo was named runner-up in the Medical Research Council’s Max Perutz Science Writing Award at their virtual award ceremony. Julia, an MRC funded PhD student in Kevin Read’s lab in the Drug Discovery Unit and Wellcome Centre for Anti-Infectives Research, received a runner-up prize of £750 for her article, “The game of hide-and-seek”.

    Latest research from Greg Findlay’s lab in the MRC Protein Phosphorylation and Ubiquitylation Unit (MRC-PPU) is published today in Developmental Cell. The work discovered a new pathway which is disrupted in people with Intellectual Disability and could provide a new therapeutic strategy for these individuals.

    Two life sciences researchers have been awarded Future Leaders Fellowships from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). Dr Megan Bergkessel, Principal Investigator in the Division of Molecular Microbiology, was awarded over £900k to research how some bacteria can survive in inhospitable environments and the potential for new treatments. Dr Adam Fletcher, a postdoctoral researcher in Dr Satpal Virdee's lab in the MRC PPU, will use the award to begin his independent research programme at the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research (CVR) at the University of Glasgow.

The collaboration will accelerate the discovery of innovative medicines by bringing together Almirall’s expertise in dermatology with the world-leading work of Professor Alessio Ciulli, from the University’s School of Life Sciences.
