The University of Dundee has joined a global group of leading academic and research institutions committed to solving the world’s most serious health issues - such as cancer and infectious diseases - at record speed. Wellcome Leap (Leap), a U.S.-based non-profit organisation founded by the Wellcome Trust to accelerate innovations that benefit global health, today announced the first participants in the newly established Leap Health Breakthrough Network.

Review of the Year 2020 took place virtually today with the Dean, Inke Nathke sharing the highlights of activity within the School from 2020 which was dominated by the coronavirus pandemic. The Review included the presentation of the annual School prizes, many were awarded in recognition of how many members of our School community worked so hard to ensure the School could still undertake its work while ensuring the safety for all. The People’s Award, the newly established Dean’s Commendation and Merit Award and PiCLS Best Mentor Award recognised some of those people.

Ingo Hein, Jens Januschke, Steve Land, Beatriz Baragana, Sheriar Hormuzdi and Susan Wyllie promoted as part of the 2020 Annual Review process for academic staff. Inke Nathke, Interim Dean of School said, “I am delighted to congratulate Ingo Hein, Jens Januschke and Stephen Land on their promotions to Reader, Sheriar Hormuzdi to Senior Lecturer and also Beatriz Baragana and Susan Wyllie. Sarah Coulthurst, Gopal Sapkota and Satpal Virdee have been promoted to Personal Chair (Professor) as part of the 2020 Annual Review process for academic staff. Sarah Coulthurst will become Professor of Microbial Interactions, Gopal Sapkota will become Professor of Disease Signalling and Satpal Virdee will become Professor of Chemical Biology.

Last year was unlike any other, with no exception for the School of Life Sciences Research Staff Association (SLSRSA) at the University of Dundee. If you are unfamiliar with SLSRSA, there’s a clue in the name – we are here to represent research staff within the SLS. We are a small group of volunteers, mainly post docs and research assistants, who seek to improve our fellow community through social events, career development assistance and networking opportunities.

The University of Dundee has received a seven-figure funding boost as part of a multi-million pound investment in research organisations across the UK. UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) has provided £213 million to expand and upgrade existing infrastructure across disciplines. Dundee will benefit through two grants totaling more than £1 million in the areas of life sciences and arts and humanities.

To help support worldwide research on LRRK2 biology, the groups of Dario Alessi and Miratul Muqit (University of Dundee) Suzanne Pfeffer and Monther Abu-Remaileh (Stanford University) have generated an LRRK2 Toolkit website in which all of their cDNA clones, antibodies, proteins, cell lines and mouse models are deposited.

Professor Geoff Codd FRSE, Emeritus Professor of Microbiology in the School of Life Sciences, has been made an MBE in the New Year Honours list, for 'services to Water Quality'.
