    Joana Faria, a postdoctoral researcher in David Horn’s Lab (BCDD-WCAIR) has been awarded a Sir Henry Dale Fellowship funded by the Wellcome Trust and the Royal Society. Joana was awarded over £1 million and will use this award to set up her laboratory at the York Biomedical Research Institute, University of York. Joana will study how a cell controls the expression of one gene out of a large gene family that code for variations of the same functional protein).

    Two hundred boxes packed with science activities and experiments are en route to some of Dundee's most deserving children this Summer. Funded and created by University of Dundee, the themed kits will be distributed by Dundee Science Centre, with one starter kit and a weekly kit to cover the six-week Summer break.

    The University of Dundee has become a signatory to the Technician Commitment, a national pledge to support technicians in universities and research institutions. The Technician Commitment is a university and research institution initiative, led by a steering board of sector bodies, with support from the Science Council and the Technicians Make It Happen campaign.

    This year, the School of Life Sciences student representatives have worked hard to increase engagement, boost employability prospects and raise awareness of student wellbeing. The School President (Lauren Wilson), Learning and Teaching Vice Presidents (Finley Reilly, Natasha Tsuro and Rabinoor Khurana) and Employability Vice Presidents (Jennifer Kerr and Kerry Hailstones) were the core team leading this change.

    Almost half a million rapid diagnostic tests developed from research at the University of Dundee will be donated with the aim of helping eliminate the disease known as African sleeping sickness. The Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND) have announced that 450,000 rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) will be donated by global healthcare company Abbott to scale up testing for sleeping sickness. Research in Dundee, in collaboration with the University of Cambridge, led to the development of the BIOLINE HAT 2.0 test, which will accelerate the efficiency of testing.

    Researchers at the University of Dundee are among those celebrating being named in HM The Queen’s birthday honours. David Gray, Head of Biology and Professor of Translational Biology at the University’s Drug Discovery Unit, has been given a BEM for services to the Delivery of Testing during the Covid-19 pandemic.

    In recent weeks staff who teach on Biological and Biomedical Sciences programmes have been recognised in the DUSA Student-led teaching awards and the BBSE awards. Professor Hari Hundal won in the Most Inspirational Teaching category of the DUSA Student-led teaching awards for the third year running while the team award went to the Physiology and Pharmacology and Biomembranes Teaching Staff led by Hari.
