Scotland’s next wave of entrepreneurs have been unveiled as the University of Dundee crowned the winners of its annual competition for business concepts, some of whom come from the School. Thirteen enterprising students and staff members from across the University walked away with a share of a record £38,000 prize fund after the winners of Venture 2021 were announced.

Review of the Year 2020 took place virtually today with the Dean, Inke Nathke sharing the highlights of activity within the School from 2020 which was dominated by the coronavirus pandemic. The Review included the presentation of the annual School prizes, many were awarded in recognition of how many members of our School community worked so hard to ensure the School could still undertake its work while ensuring the safety for all. The People’s Award, the newly established Dean’s Commendation and Merit Award and PiCLS Best Mentor Award recognised some of those people.

Review of the Year 2019 took place today with the Dean, Julian Blow sharing the highlights of activity within the School from 2019. The presentation closed with the annual School prizes presentation. Here are the winners: Innovator of the Year Innovator of the Year is for any member or team within SLS that demonstrably achieved scientific, technical or commercial innovation that came to fruition in 2019.

A researcher from the School has been presented with a prestigious science award from the British Federation of Women Graduates (BFWG). Azul Zorzoli, a PhD student from Argentina, has received the Johnstone and Florence Stoney Prize, which recognises outstanding academic excellence in postgraduate researchers.

Researchers at the University of Dundee have discovered an enzyme they believe could be key to preventing Group A Streptococcus infections that cause more than 500,000 deaths worldwide each year.

Dr Helge Dorfmueller and Dr Harunori Yoshikawa have been awarded Tenvous Scotland grants in the most recent round of funding. Dr Dorfmueller, a Principal Investigator in the Division of Molecular Microbiology, was awarded a 2 year large research grant worth almost £100k. The funding will allow Dr Dorfmueller to investigate a biosynthetic carbohydrate as a vaccine candidate for Streptococcus pyogenes infections. S. pyogenes is a major human pathogen, causing more than 500,000 deaths annually worldwide.

Dr Helge Dorfmueller, from the Division of Molecular Microbiology, has won an award recognising the best research project funded by Tenovus Scotland. He has received the Sir Robin MacLellan Travel Award for his study 'Towards the discovery of chemical tools to prevent human infection caused by pathogenic Streptococcus pyogenes'. Dr Dorfmueller has been awarded £3000 towards the cost of travelling to a conference or symposium to enable the dissemination of Tenovus Scotland-funded research.
