Tissue Culture Technician

Applications are invited for a full-time Technician within our Tissue Culture facilities. The post is available immediately and is funded for up to 3 years.  


Duties will include growing and routine testing of cells, ordering of consumables, helping to maintain cleanliness and generally ensuring the smooth running of the facilities. Candidates should be qualified to ONC level or equivalent. Knowledge of tissue culture procedures and aseptic techniques would be an advantage.

JOB DESCRIPTION


Essential Requirements:


• Tissue culture experience would be advantageous and knowledge of aseptic technique
• Computer knowledge required for maintenance of cell line databases/spreadsheets and ordering online


You will also have responsibility for:


• Maintenance and servicing of equipment and arrangement of repair using in-house resources or external companies
• Cleaning of tissue culture suites including hoods, water baths, work surfaces, shelving, floors and routine sterilisation of CO2 Incubators
• General care/maintenance of the tissue culture microscopes and bench centrifuges
• Maintenance of tissue culture lab coats, including distribution and arranging regular autoclaving prior to laundering
• Emptying of domestic waste bags at the end of each day
• Ensuring a constant supply of 70% ethanol/IPA for users
• Ordering of consumables for use in the SCILLS tissue culture suites, unpacking deliveries and restocking shelves to maintain consumables levels
• Ensuring the tissue culture facilities are used and maintained correctly
• Defrosting of freezers/cleaning of fridges when necessary
• Monitoring and reporting to the tissue culture manager any infringements of laboratory regulations/practices within the tissue culture suites
• Maintaining supplies of liquid nitrogen, ensuring freezers are topped up and transporting liquid nitrogen dewars to the basement for filling
• Growing, storing and maintenance of cell lines required by SCILLS and MRC-PPU users
• Advising members of staff about tissue culture techniques and cell lines
• Maintaining a sufficient amount of each cell line in liquid nitrogen
Cataloguing of liquid nitrogen cell freezer database
• Routine testing of cells for mycoplasma infection
• Dealing with company reps and keeping up to date with the latest equipment/ best prices
• Performing any other reasonable duties, as required


Supervision:


You will be accountable to Sir Philip Cohen, Director of the Scottish Institute for Cell Signalling and work under the immediate supervision of the Tissue Culture Manager in the MRC Protein Phosphorylation Unit.
