Summary of Job Purpose and Principal Duties
The Kulathu Lab at the MRC PPU, University of Dundee is looking to hire TWO postdocs with strong expertise in biochemistry to address exciting questions about the mechanisms and function of the essential but poorly understood posttranslational modifier UFM1. The project is funded by a BBSRC grant awarded recently to the lab, and the position is available for 3 years.
Summary of Skills, Experience and Qualifications
We are looking for talented, motivated individuals with a PhD (or nearing completion of your PhD) in Biochemistry, Structural biology or a related field, with a track record of publication in peer-reviewed journals. Candidates will be expected to have expertise in one or more of the following areas:
- Structural biology (X-ray crystallography or cryo-EM)
- Recombinant protein expression and purification
- In vitro reconstitution and characterization of multiprotein complexes
- Biochemistry, enzyme kinetics
- Cell biology
- Protein quality control
- Mass spectrometry
In addition, interests/experience in one or more of the following areas: ubiquitin system, protein quality control, neurodegeneration and signal transduction mechanisms regulated by posttranslational modifications, are desirable. You will have a track record of research productivity and have demonstrated an ability to work independently, enthusiasm for research and excellent communication skills. It is expected that the candidate will develop and apply a broad range of techniques to pursue the research objectives.
Appointment as a Postdoctoral Research Assistant on the Grade 7 salary scale is dependent upon you having been awarded a PhD. An appointment may be considered if you are shortly expected to be awarded a PhD. The initial appointment will be made as a Research Assistant on the Training Grade 7 salary scale (Spinal Point 28, £31,866).

This project will be performed in the MRC Protein Phosphorylation and Ubiquitylation Unit (MRC PPU), based within the School of Life Sciences at the University of Dundee. The MRC PPU is in a beautiful location, embedded within the School of Life Sciences, University of Dundee, which is one of the premier Life Sciences research centres in the world.
