Thank you for your interest in applying for a PhD in the School of Life Sciences.

Please read and follow the information below before continuing with your pre-application.  For any enquires please contact

Our PhD programmes each have different eligibility criteria.  Please ensure that you meet the criteria for your chosen programme before you apply. Further details on eligible nationalities for our different programmes are described on our eligibility page (link). Please note that any application received that does not meet the eligibility criteria will not be considered.

Academic Qualifications: Candidates for studentships must hold qualifications equivalent to a first or upper second-class honours degree from a UK academic institution. Qualifications, or a combination of qualifications and experience, which demonstrate equivalent ability and attainment will also be considered. For example, a 2(ii) degree may be enhanced by the acquisition of a Masters degree.

Please take note of the application deadlines, which are specified on individual programme pages.

We encourage potential applicants to provide as much information as possible to support their application (taking note of the word limits that apply).  This enables potential supervisors and Programme committee members to assess your application to its full potential.  Applications with poorly completed details are unlikely to be taken forward.

Following shortlisting and interview, successful applicants will be asked to submit a formal application via UCAS.

Important - If you are an EASTBIO applicant, please click here for more information on how to apply to the EASTBIO programme directly.

For all other programmes, the School uses Jisc Online Surveys to manage all pre-applications, the link below will take you to the form. Before you begin, you can view the questions you will be asked during your pre-application if you wish: a PDF copy of the form is available in the documents section on the right-hand side of this page.

Important - we recommend that you type up your answers in a separate document e.g. Microsoft Word or Google Docs, this will allow you to check spelling and correct errors before entering the text into the online pre-application form.

Once you have started the pre-application online, you can choose to come back to it later if you wish. Selecting the ‘Finish later’ option at the bottom of each page will provide you with a link to your part-completed form, which you can bookmark or email to yourself.
