Nobel Laureate, and President of The Royal Society of London, Sir Paul Nurse will officially open the new £26million Discovery Centre at the University of Dundee on Wednesday October 1st. The Discovery Centre is home to researchers supported by over £31million of research grants, bringing the investment in the total operation to well over £57million.

New facility makes iPS cell lines available to University life sciences and medical researchers Researchers at the University of Dundee now have access to iPS cell lines from the Human Pluripotent Stem Cell Facility, a new initiative jointly funded by the College of Life Sciences (CLS) and the College of Medicine Dentistry and Nursing (CMDN). Overseen by a cross-college committee, the facility is managed by Dr. Lindsay Davidson and will allow researchers across the university access to these cells in their work.

A team of Dundee students who are developing a device to help combat some of the effects of cystic fibrosis have been invited to present their idea at a national CF conference. The iGEM team of students from the University of Dundee has spent the summer working on the `Lung Ranger’, which they hope will allow faster and more targeted treatment of infection for CF patients. Today the students were invited to speak at the Cystic Fibrosis Trust national conference in Manchester and share their idea with patients and clinicians.

A collaboration between two interdisciplinary research groups at the University of Dundee has led to a better understanding of how cells are able to maintain their stability and function in response to environmental challenges and potential threats. The laboratories of Professors Julian Blow and Tim Newman have published a paper showing how a cell’s gene regulatory network – the system that allows a cell to produce the right set of proteins in response to external and internal environmental triggers – is wired up to maintain its stability.

The College of Life Sciences is delighted to open its doors to the newly built Centre for Translational and Interdisciplinary Research. Tours of the whole facility will be run at 11:00 and 12:00. Booking is not essential but spaces are limited so please arrive early. Owing to health and safety restrictions children under the age of 12 cannot participate in tours of the laboratory areas.
