16 Dec 2021The Royal Society’s first open access title, Open Biology, has reached its 10th Anniversary. To kick off a year of celebration, Subject Editors have highlighted their favourite articles from the past decade. Of the nine top publications selected, two are from Dundee, with work from the research groups of Julian Blow and Miratul Muqit being highlighted.

16 Dec 2021Fergus Preston, who is undertaking a PhD within the DDU and WCAIR, was one of 10 successful applicants for the Scientific Update Young Chemist award. This award is open to PhD students presenting work at the Scientific update 7th Winter Process Chemistry Conference, 8-9 December 2021.

07 Dec 2021Dr Graham Christie has been appointed as Academic Regional Lead (ARL) for South East Asia (ASEAN). “I am delighted to be taking on the ARL role for South East Asia and very much looking forward to working with the international team. I am particularly excited by the opportunities that the role affords in working with colleagues from across the University and beyond to continue to develop our strategy for recruitment of students from the ASEAN region,” said Graham.

06 Dec 2021Three PhD students from the MRC PPU have successfully made It through to the final round of the Biotechnology Young Entrepreneurs Scheme (YES). Ailsa Black (Rousseau lab), Bill Carton (Sapkota lab) and Lee Armstrong (Kulathu lab) took part as team “Affinitas Biosciences Ltd” with their idea to supplement a chewing gum with a nanobody that specifically targets and inhibits tooth decaying bacteria.

17 Nov 2021Aanchal Udaynath Pareri’s decision to give up her job and move 5,000 miles to study would have been life-changing at any time, but doing so at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic made the switch even more momentous. Her choice to relocate from Mumbai has certainly paid off, however, as Aanchal (26) is about to undertake a PhD at the University of Dundee as she aims to fulfil her dream of becoming a cancer researcher.

University of Dundee researchers have been named “six of the best” in a new list of the world’s most influential academics. Four experts from the University’s School of Life Sciences, and a further two from the School of Medicine, have been named in Clarivate’s Highly Cited Researchers 2021 list. They take their place there alongside 24 Nobel laureates.

12 Nov 2021Scientists at the University of Dundee and Harvard Medical School have identified the key targets of an enzyme that play a critical role in protecting the brain against the development of Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s disease is the fastest growing degenerative disorder of the brain. Patients develop involuntary movements and increasing disability. To date there is no cure or treatments that can slow the disease course.
