A new study entitled “Proteomic Analysis of the Cell Cycle of Procylic Form Trypanosoma brucei” has just been published in Molecular and Cellular Proteomics (Crozier et al., 2018, Mol Cell Proteomics 2018 17: 1184-1195). This study resulted from a collaboration between the laboratories of Mike Ferguson (BCDD) and Angus Lamond (GRE). Trypanosoma brucei is an evolutionarily divergent eukaryotic protozoan parasite that causes human and animal trypanosomiasis (also called ‘sleeping sickness’) in sub-Saharan Africa.

A new diagnostic test developed from research at the Universities of Dundee and Cambridge has been launched with the aim of helping eliminate the disease known as African sleeping sickness. Sleeping sickness, or Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT), is caused by parasites transmitted by tsetse flies in sub-Saharan Africa and has a devastating impact, causing thousands of deaths each year.

The cattle disease nagana, also called African animal trypanosomiasis, caused by the parasites Trypanosoma vivax and Trypanosoma congolense, affects huge swathes of sub-Saharan Africa, and the T. vivax disease has also spread to South America. With around 60 million cattle at risk from the disease, which causes muscle wasting and death, the socio-economic impacts of T. vivax infections in livestock are profound.

The University of Dundee has been awarded almost £1million of £23m in new grants announced today by the Medical Research Council (MRC). The MRC is accelerating innovative medical research with £23.3 million in new funding to take ground-breaking ideas from UK universities into industry and out to patients. The announcement was made today by Universities and Science Minister Jo Johnson.

Professor Mike Ferguson has been named as the recipient of the 2016 Alice and C.C. Wang Award in Molecular Parasitology by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB). Mike said, "This prize is of particular significance to me; Professor C.C. Wang is an outstanding pioneer of molecular parasitology. He made a number of seminal discoveries on the trypanosomes that cause African sleeping sickness and, together with his wife Alice, on the Giardia parasites that cause a form of dysentery.

This week The Courier ran its Impact 100 list of the most influential individuals and organisations from across Tayside and Fife in 2014. The University of Dundee is strongly represented in the poll, with 17 placings and listings for staff, students, graduates, honorary graduates and other friends of the University below. Two of the most prominent members of the College of Life Sciences, Professor Sir Philip Cohen and Professor Mike Ferguson feature on the list as well as long-time CLS associate Professor Sue Black of CAHID.

The University of Dundee has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Bangalore BioCluster in India with the aim of creating a joint Drug Discovery Centre to tackle antimicrobial resistance. There is already an active programme of scientific collaboration between Dundee and the Bangalore BioCluster. The Biocluster is jointly supported by the Departments of Biotechnology and Atomic Energy of the Government of India.
