    The 18th Wellcome Trust Centre For Gene Regulation & Expression Principal Investigators Retreat was held at Fernie Castle, Letham, Cupar on Friday 3 December 2010. In spite of the snow and inclement weather across the country, the biannual retreat was well-attended and acknowledged to be a great success.

    Mr David Dickerson from Tom Owen-Hughes Lab, successfully passed his PhD viva on Friday 26th November 2010. David's title was "The study of chromatin dynamics during transcription by fluorescence microscopy". The internal examiner was Jonathan Chubb and the external examiner was Anne Donaldson, University of Aberdeen.

    Nazan Saner from Tomo Tanaka's group, successfully passed her PhD viva yesterday, Wednesday 24th November 2010.  Nazan's title was "Live-cell analyses reveal organization of replication factories".

    This summer, two Nuffield Bursary recipients were hosted by the Division of Plant Sciences (based on the SCRI campus) to carry out basic plant research in the labs of Prof. John Brown and Dr. Edgar Huitema.

    Kathryn Kirkwood is the latest Wellcome Trust Clinical PhD student to arrive at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Gene Regulation and Expression Centre, where she has joined the laboratory of Centre Director Angus Lamond. Kate is the second clinical PhD student to work in the Centre, following Katie Hands (nee Walker) who joined Professor Ron Hay's laboratory last year.

    Professor Frank Sargent to deliver Wain Medal Lecture  Professor Frank Sargent of the Division of Molecular Microbiology will give the 2010 Wain Medal Lecture at the University of Kent’s Canterbury campus on Friday 19 November. Entitled “Bioenergy and Biofuels: Learning from Bacteria”, his lecture will take place in Woolf College Lecture Theatre at 5pm. The Wain Medal Lecture is public, free lecture presented in a way that is accessible to scientists and non-scientists alike.

    School students and members of the public attended a two-day event on 21 and 22 May 2010: a hands-on science experience for school children and the general public held at local science centre Sensation at which microbiologists from the College of Life Sciences at the University of Dundee invited visitors to discover the wondrous world of Magnificent Microbes. Although most microbes are invisible to the naked eye, our bodies contain millions of them, they help shape our environment, and we use them without knowing it everyday.

    Eris Duro, a PhD student in John Rouse’s team in the MRC Protein Phosphorylation Unit, has discovered a complex of two proteins in human cells, termed MMS22L and TONSL, that plays a vital role in repairing DNA breaks that arise during the process of DNA replication.
