    The new Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Dundee was announced on Monday 6th July as Professor Pete Downes. Pete Downes has been Acting Principal since the departure of Sir Alan Langlands earlier this year to become Chief Executive of the Higher Education Funding Council for England. Pete arrived in Dundee 19 years ago and has served, from 1994, as the Head of the Department of Biochemistry, the Head of the School of Life Sciences and, since 2003, the Head of the College of Life Sciences (CLS).

    A long-standing member of University of Dundee staff will retire on Tuesday, June 30th, after more than 42 years of service. Lynda Connelly began her career as a technician in the Department of Anatomy, part of what was then Queens College, Dundee, as an 18-year-old in May 1967. She worked her way to chief technician level and, since November 2007, has made good use of her administration skills as Finance Office supervisor for the University’s College of Life Sciences.

    The SCottish Institute for ceLL Signalling (SCILLS) – established in October 2008 with a £10 million grant from the Scottish Government and based at the University of Dundee - has made its first key scientific appointments with leading researchers recruited from Europe and North America.

    A University of Dundee scientist has been awarded a £1.9 million Wellcome Trust grant for innovative basic research which could lead to the development of new treatments for a range of debilitating diseases including cancer, Alzheimer’s, and diabetes. Professor Daan van Aalten, at the College of Life Sciences at Dundee, has received the funding from the Wellcome Trust for his research on how proteins in the cell are regulated by an unusual chemical modification called O-GlcNAc.

    Professor Brian Hemmings, a former post-doc (1980-1982) with Professor Sir Philip Cohen FRS and Professor David Glover, former faculty member (1990 - 1998) were elected as Fellows of the Royal Society on 15th May 2009. The College of Life Sciences offers warm congratulations to our former Colleagues.

    Professor Sir David Lane and Professor Birgit Lane are to leave the University of Dundee and take up full-time appointments with the Agency for Science, Technology and Research in Singapore from 1st September 2009. Sir David Lane will resume his position as Chief Scientist to the Agency for Science, Technology and Research. Birgit Lane will resume full-time duties as Executive Director of the Institute of Medical Biology at the Agency, which she helped to establish.

    A University of Dundee scientist’s research into diabetes has been boosted by a £12,500 donation by a local fundraising group. The Dundee and District Diabetes UK Volunteer Group will present Dr Kei Sakamoto of the Medical Research Council (MRC) Protein Phosphorylation Unit with a cheque at the Wellcome Trust Building on Tuesday, May 26.

    Professor Dame Louise Johnson FRS, of the University of Oxford, has delivered the 25th Peter Garland Lecture at the University of Dundee. The Peter Garland Lecture is the most important lecture held in the College of Life Sciences and has been held every year since 1985. The lecture is named after the University’s first Professor of Biochemistry, who was instrumental in developing Life Sciences at Dundee over the period 1970-1984.
